Pala Interactive In The News

New Jersey’s decision on Pala Interactive sends a mixed message

By: Hartley Henderson - Exclusive to OSGA.com
Published: Dec 1, 2014

Last month the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) gave the Pala Band of Mission Indians a license to offer online poker in New Jersey in partnership with Borgata and with the license they had to determine whether Jim Ryan, the CEO of Pala Interactive was a "bad actor". They stated that New Jersey had no concern about Jim Ryan and his history with Excapsa Gaming claiming that Ryan never violated the UIGEA and he was in no way connected to the cheating scandal at UltimateBet. The decision has many, including myself, scratching our heads because it is inconsistent with other decisions the DGE has made. To understand the whole situation it's important to look at Ryan's history in the industry.

Chukchansi Casino Remains Closed

Judge says Chukchansi Gold to stay closed

Scott Smith, Associated Press · October 29, 2014 at 5:55 pm

FRESNO, Calif. — A casino at the center of a tribe’s internal power struggle will remain closed until rival factions that operate it can settle their differences that recently erupted into an armed confrontation, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill said that tensions remain high at the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, prompting him to keep the doors closed, while admonishing tribal leaders for lacking leadership at the expense of hundreds of employees now without paychecks.

On Oct. 10, the attorney general and the National Indian Gaming Commission shut down the casino in Coarsegold, about 50 miles northeast of Fresno, after an armed faction stormed it, sending hundreds of gamblers running with chips still on the tables.

Judge Says Phil Ivey Cheated

A London Judge ruled professional poker player Phil Ivey cheated in a baccarat tournament.  Phil Ivey is the brand ambassador for Pala Interactive.

Now it's not entirely clear to me that Phil Ivey cheated in the traditional sense. Ivey calls himself an advantage player meaning he will use odds and take advantage of casino mistakes in order to win.

Ivey used edge sorting to help identify cards and then apparently influenced the dealer to sort and deal the cards in such a way to give the players an advantage.  The Judge ruled Ivey was not allowed to collect his $12.4 million winnings and could not appeal the decision.

Some feel it was the casino's fault and that they should pay up.

Bloomberg News: Poker Pro Ivey Did Cheat to Win $12.4 Million, Judge Rules

By Jeremy Hodges

Excerpt:

Professional poker player Phil Ivey’s use of edge sorting to win 7.7 million pounds ($12.4 million) at a form of Baccarat was tantamount to cheating, a London judge ruled today.

Judge John Mitting, who said Ivey was an honest witness, ruled against the 38-year-old gambler’s bid to recoup money a Genting Bhd. (GENT) casino had withheld. While he might not have realized it was cheating, Mitting said Ivey and a companion influenced a croupier to deal the cards in certain ways.
#
Both sides agreed at trial that Ivey was in the casino in August 2012 and that he won the money. “The issue is whether it amounted to cheating,” Christopher Pymont, Genting’s lawyer, said in documents filed at London’s High Court.

Edge sorting is a way a card player can gain an advantage by working out the value of a card by spotting flaws or particular patterns on the back of some cards.

Self-Centered Poker Pros

Long article but here is an excerpt:

Self-Centered Poker Pros Tarnish the Game for Everyone

Law suits aside, it appears the Pala Indians in California still want Phil Ivey to be their brand ambassador for the launch of Pala Interactive if and when online poker is launched in the state. And in related news the Morongo Indians are trying to convince the state that PokerStars should not be banned as a bad actor and be allowed to partner with them for legal online California poker. How a company that paid over $714 million to the feds and was exonerated is a bad actor while Phil Ivey who admitted to cheating to get an advantage over the casino isn't a bad actor is beyond me. But that's a topic for a different article.

The Big Secret Behind Pala Interactive

What's the Big Secret behind Pala Interactive?  The Big Secret is that it's not really a secret.  It's been all over the news for over a year.  I first linked to a couple of articles on Pala Interactive back in July 2013.  Seems the only people that don't really know about Pala Interactive are tribal members.

Robert Smith Talks Tribal Gaming and Online Poker

There is a recent article from tribalgovernmentgaming.com dated April 9th, 2014 that quotes Robert Smith fairly extensively.

Here is the link to the article:

Going Commercial By Dave Bontempo Wed, Apr 09, 2014

There is a few paragraph introduction to Indian Gaming.  If you scroll down a bit you will come to this subheading:

Pala: One Powerful Executive

Here are a few quotes:
#
The Pala group used other people’s money to build its empire and the bank had a long-term customer. Pala later obtained a second $125 million loan for expansion and has paid down most of its debt.
“We only owe about $40 million now,” Smith says. “We could pay it off but would rather leave the credit open in case we decide to do a facelift.”
#
That formula also concerns gaming’s next golden goose. Smith, the chairman of the California Tribal Business Alliance, says he has personally helped the effort to bring two online gaming bills before the California legislature. He hopes they pass by the end of the summer, enabling all state tribes the option of establishing online gambling.

“It would take from $10 million to $20 million to get started, so most tribes in California would not be able to do it,” Smith asserts, “but this is another case in which everyone will benefit. We will negotiate a fee for the state and we also will build a call center, etc. Hopefully, we will get this one over the finish line.”

Pala has joined with former PartyPoker chief Jim Ryan to form Pala Interactive. While the tribe has not revealed its plans for this venture, an early announcement that Pala has partnered with poker superstar Phil Ivey is just an indication that Pala has grand visions for a legal iPoker industry in California.

Pala Interactive In New Jersey?

**UPDATE:  The Dark Horse In The Jersey Online Race article appears to be no longer available.

However, the full article can still be read on Google Cache:  Cached Version of A Dark Horse in the Jersey Online Race by allinmag.com

Pala Interactive LLC is Pala's Online Casino arm.  While online gaming and online poker is still illegal in California other States like New Jersey have begun lifting the ban on some forms of online gaming.

I came across this article recently titled A DARK HORSE IN THE JERSEY ONLINE RACE by allinmag.com which states the following:

"Who is Pala Interactive? It’s an online arm of Pala Casino, located in Northern San Diego County in California, owned and operated by the Pala Band of Mission Indians since it opened its doors in 2001. The Pala Band of Mission Indians are known to be a driving force trying to pass online gaming legislation in California, and word has come out that Pala Interactive has obtained a transactional waiver to operate in New Jersey. That news made Pala one of the more constant talking points of the recent G2E convention in Las Vegas, generating buzz as a dark horse on the Jersey landscape."

Also:

"Also, it’s rumored that Pala Interactive has its own poker technology, as compared to many of the online companies that have a partner on that front and have to share their revenues as a result. And the accompanying rumor is that Pala has already invested nine figures—more than $100,000,000—into this venture, which would seem to indicate they’re in it for the long haul." (emph. added)

Pala Ventures Into Online Gaming

Couple of Articles on Pala's online Poker Venture:

The Dirty Stack, Pala Interactive’s Hope, Regulation of Online Poker

Posted by Peter McCullough on July 10, 2013 in Gambler's Report, Online Gambling News, Online Poker News

Pala Interactive, LLC based in California is a relatively new online poker collaboration between former bwin.party CEO Jim Ryan and the Pala Band of Mission Indians. The Pala Indian tribe is behind San Diego’s premier casino, the Pala Casino Resort Spa.

As with any new venture, the start up needs a face to help promote the brand. That face belongs to none other than professional poker player, Phil Ivey. Ivey is not new to being the face behind a poker room startup, back in 2004, Ivey was one of the most popular players backing resurrected poker room Full Tilt Poker.

Rumors surfaced this week that the so-called “Tiger Woods of poker,” Phil Ivey, has made an agreement with a southern California indian tribe to be the face of their Internet gaming venture.

Ivey is set to team up with the Pala Indian Tribe, which runs one of California’s most successful tribal casinos. The Pala Casino Resort and Spa is located just outside the city of San Diego. Also slated to participate in the new venture is Jim Ryan, formerly the chief executive officer of bwin.party.
